Character
Name: Will Vega, Jr ("Junior")
Canon: Original (Near Miss)
Canon point: A few months after moving back home.
Age: 26
Type: Original character.
History: Once upon a time, there was a boy named Will. Will was a happy child who loved his family dearly. When he was very young, his parents died under mysterious circumstances and he was adopted by his paternal grandparents; facing the loss of their child, they called Will "Junior" in honor of his father. Growing up with his grandparents, they treated Junior as nothing less than their own although they were a bit harsh with their tough love at times. They insisted Junior exercise every day, even after he started school and had gym classes, and taught him all the basics of defending himself.
It didn't help too much when one of his first days of school resulted in bullying the incredibly small and meek boy. School was his first real foray into public, especially without his grandparents, and he had made easy pickings. Thankfully, an older boy in the same grade named Felix came along and showed the bullies what-for while at the same time attaching himself to Junior at the hip. Felix was an odd one, joining school two years late due to an accident that took his arms resulting in years of physical therapy and acclimation to cyborg limbs. He was loud and strong and didn't seem to mind little, quiet Junior tagging along with him everywhere.
As they grew up, their friends' group expanded but the two of them never parted. It wasn't until they had graduated high school that they split up for about the first time ever, with Junior leaving town to attend a prestigious school to follow his true calling: baking. With his grandparents' and Felix's blessing, he disappeared for many years. Efforts were made to reach out, but with sporadic contact with Felix and his own feelings that had blossomed for the last several years, he slowly stopped trying to bother him and resolved to come back as a changed man who could actually act on what he felt. It was around now that he started realizing his upbringing might not have been so normal, but what could he do when it was already too late? After graduating, finding a job, and earning enough money on his own, Junior finally returned to his hometown and purchased what used to be an old dance studio. He converted it into a bakery that he then named Buns & Roses.
All of this accomplished, Junior opened contact with all of his old friends again. He was far from a completely different person, but his confidence had grown and he was ready to try and make something of his life. Still too shy to outright admit his feelings, Junior currently asks Felix (and sometimes other friends, so it isn't awkward) to show him around town again and see any new sights that have popped up. Fake dates! Maybe someday they'll be real dates. He's better at action than words, anyway. Now if only they could stop ending up so weirdly when businesses close early or things start breaking all the time whenever they stop by...
Setting concepts:
The world, Earth, is a cyberpunk setting.
- Androids refer to products of genetic manipulation in order to create humans with superior capabilities. As this must be done during gestation on specimens unable to give consent, and the modifications passing down in the bloodlines presents the same problem, the action of creating an android is highly illegal. Those born in already-created android lines are required to have it noted in their legal documentation, although how successful this law has been is up for debate.
- Cyborgs are common people with mechanical enhancements, either for medical or aesthetic reasons. All but the oldest components are at least partially biomechanical to encourage the body's acceptance. Visually speaking, components still have a highly mechanical look to them.
- Buns & Roses is Junior's bakery that everyone has turned into the de facto hangout spot. [one, two] He has two tray-bots named Cat and Fiddle who work around the shop by cleaning, serving and fetching things for Junior.
- The Vegas were a family of prestigious assassins starting with Junior's great grandmother. For three generations, their unconfirmed status as androids only helped their prestige and legend grow. Junior's parents were killed in retribution for a hit gone sideways when he was only three, resulting in him being raised by his grandparents without knowledge of the family history. (They still trained him in the arts of self-defense and offense to the point of instinctual reactions, and he never thought to question it until much, much later.) The Vega legacy lives on, however, and the poor boy was unfortunately put on the map when his official purchase of Buns & Roses was documented, resulting in several hits and recruitment notices being put on his head almost immediately.
- To reiterate, Junior has a lot of people headhunting him. Dead or alive. He currently has no idea, and often finds himself surrounded by mundane weirdness going on while Felix disposes of the would-be hitmen behind his back. He calls it bad luck, the world's attempt to conspire against him wooing Felix. If only he knew.
- Technology itself sits somewhere in the "futuristic" set, with a 70s shiny/chrome/copper aesthetic. They've achieved things such as flying vehicular transportation, basic nonhumanoid robotics and mental interface into technology with proper external equipment. Full digitization of the brain is currently being researched.
Personality: On the very surface, Junior can appear pretty intimidating. He's not very expressive and his tone of voice can be rather flat, coupled with his height makes it easy for someone to assume he isn't very interested in friendly chat. This couldn't be further from the truth. Although not very skilled in speaking with other people, Junior does like them and would like to get closer to anyone he finds interesting, and doesn't really abide pointless rudeness. He gets easily absorbed in his work, yet will always make time for friends if called upon. Junior was raised slightly away from society where his grandparents could control many of his influences, and the result is some natural aloofness, a lack of emotive response, and a blunt attitude. Nothing overly jarring but enough that some are easily put off by the lack of pretense. Because of these reactions to who he really is, Junior can be rather shy with new people he actually wants to talk to in fear of driving them off and refrains from his own brand of silliness until he's comfortable. His tolerance for loud and boisterous, on the other hand, is bar none thanks to growing up with his best friend, Felix Bakar.
Even having been subliminally trained to instinctively protect himself at all costs, Junior has added an instinct of his own making on top of that: let Felix take care of it first. The older man has dibs on protecting Junior from whatever bullies would pick on the quiet, weird one that he is and this is even more of an honor than Junior himself realizes. With these self-protective instincts, Junior's gentle nature tends to become overshadowed if he has to defend himself and leaves him rather distressed in the aftermath. The idea of taking responsibility of someone else simply to hurt them for his own benefit is not one he handles well. One can only imagine how Not Well he would have taken growing up in the family business. He simply feels far too much, even if he hardly knows how to speak about it.
His relationship with his grandparents is rather intense. They raised him, they are more his parents than his parents ever got to be, and they also turned him into something he didn't have a choice in for the sake of keeping him safe. It was only until very recently that Junior even realized that gyms and playgrounds both weren't meant for the purpose of letting people learn the same things he did growing up, and he doesn't even know how to feel about that alienation. Thus he's been trying to keep a physical distance between them for the moment while he sorts it out, although he isn't quite managing emotional distance. They still contact each other at least once a week if not more.
When it comes to Felix, his emotions are much less complex while being no less powerful. They've always been side by side, and Felix's eccentricities are second-nature to Junior himself. Unlike most people, Felix's prosthetic arms are just part of who he is and Junior's never felt weirded out about it; on the contrary, thinking of him as anything less but whole would never occur to him. Having spent most of his life with Felix's protection and friendship, Junior's developed well past a crush on his best friend and currently spends time trying to hint at his feelings through going on dates and inviting Felix to hang out, because what are words? What are feelings? Do they taste good?
Appearance: Six feet, three inches of lanky nerd. Fluffy black hair that isn't always in the best condition and stormy brown eyes. Angular features and a rather obvious habit of slouching and leaning over — most of his friends are shorties and he's learned to compensate. PB is Adam Driver.
Abilities: Having found his life's calling as a baker, Junior takes his business rather seriously. He enjoys bringing smiles to peoples' faces and experimenting in the kitchen; his cooking isn't half-bad, but nothing next to his main interest. Pastries, artisan breads, you name it. His natural body temperature sits closer to 99/100°F which only helps with his baking.
That said, he's been trained since he was young in martial arts, agility and general fitness until his reaction to a fight is purely instinctual once pushed. Basically some light brainwashing to keep him safe as he could be without knowing his family used to be hardcore assassins. As you do. Because of all this, he still keeps limber and in-shape even if he's never intended to put any of this to use. This is aided by his unknowing status as an android (genetically-altered human) where I could technobabble at you exactly what's different about him, but it amounts to the fact that he's stronger, possesses better reflexes, sharper senses and rather high intellect. This is easily noticed by medical examination which is exactly why he's been instilled with a dislike of hospitals and no love for doctors or medical professions. He's a staunch believer in self-care and has practice in taking of injuries on his own.

Third-person: TDM #35 with Bisi.
First-person: Let me take a guess at how many people you get freaking out on a regular basis. Don't get me wrong, this whole thing is... uh, bullshit, but given we apparently can't do anything about it — you still get a lot of whiners? Maybe I'm not being fair. Maybe everyone is reasonable about all this.
Then again, maybe not.
Still, forgive me if I mess up some kind of cultural thing because I'm from somewhere that doesn't have magic or people other than humans. I'm still learning.
