NAME: Will Vega, Jr (Junior)
CANON: Original
AGE: 27
CANON POINT: Around mid-"season two" of his canon
BACKGROUND: Once upon a time, there was a boy named Will. Will was a happy child who loved his family dearly. When he was very young, his parents died under mysterious circumstances and he was adopted by his paternal grandparents; facing the loss of their child, they called Will "Junior" in honor of his father. Growing up with his grandparents, Saylor and Thomas, they treated Junior as nothing less than their own although they were a bit harsh with their tough love at times. They insisted Junior exercise every day, even after he started school and had gym classes, and taught him all the basics of defending himself.
It didn't help too much when one of his first days of school resulted in bullying the incredibly small and meek boy. School was his first real foray into public, especially without his grandparents, and he had made easy pickings. Thankfully, an older boy in the same grade named Felix came along and showed the bullies what-for while at the same time attaching himself to Junior at the hip. Felix was an odd one, joining school two years late due to an accident that took his arms resulting in years of physical therapy and acclimation to cyborg limbs. He was loud and strong and didn't seem to mind little, quiet Junior tagging along with him everywhere.
As they grew up, their friends' group expanded but the two of them never parted. It wasn't until they had graduated high school that they split up for about the first time ever, with Junior leaving town to attend a prestigious school to follow his true calling: baking. With his grandparents' and Felix's blessing, he disappeared for many years. Efforts were made to reach out, but with sporadic contact with Felix and his own feelings that had blossomed for the last several years, he slowly stopped trying to bother him and resolved to come back as a changed man who could actually act on what he felt. It was around now that he started realizing his upbringing might not have been so normal, but what could he do when it was already too late? After graduating, finding a job, and earning enough money on his own, Junior finally returned to his hometown and purchased what used to be an old dance studio. He converted it into a bakery that he then named Buns & Roses.
All of this accomplished, Junior opened contact with all of his old friends again. He was far from a completely different person, but his confidence had grown and he was ready to try and make something of his life. Still too shy to outright admit his feelings, Junior currently asks Felix (and sometimes other friends, so it isn't awkward) to show him around town again and see any new sights that have popped up. Fake dates! Maybe someday they'll be real dates. He's better at action than words, anyway. Now if only they could stop ending up so weirdly when businesses close early or things start breaking all the time whenever they stop by...
Things went on like that for quite a while. Several months, in fact, with both men having their own internal crises about not getting through to the other, and many close calls on Junior's life hidden away by Felix. It wasn't until a trip to the park that things went to hell in rapid succession: gunfire, yelling, crazy insanity all calling about killing that Vega kid no matter who went down with him. That sort of thing was impossible to cover up and, with some quick-footed help from Junior and the killshot from Felix, the insane assassin was put down once and for all. Lots of questions arose from the incident and answers shouted over gunfire only got so far. They removed themselves from the scene while Junior had a light panic and everything settled in, and Felix explained the whole lot. Junior's family legacy, the hits that have been on him for ages, Felix's own part in Junior's protection. It wasn't something that could be absorbed all at once but eventually the dust did settle.
Encouraged to not feel pressured into taking up the mantle just because it seemed like the right thing to do, things got more and less complicated at the same time. Felix was much more open about killing the people after Junior, and Junior much more often noticed the hijinks going on around him — now escalating through the assassin community's collective impatience and Junior's own involvement, often using himself as bait or otherwise assisting in his own protection. This pattern held for another few months until an assassin came after Felix instead, surprising them both, and making for a very hectic weekend of running away and hiding and killing. That was when Junior mustered up the courage and made a move, a kiss, and finally sealed the deal between the two hopeless lovebirds that were too stupid to actually say they liked each other aloud. Now not only were they ridiculous in avoiding death, but were ridiculous in avoiding boredom and exploring how already-totally-married they were (to the point where Felix even changed his name from Bakar to Altair so they would match). One notable incident left Junior with a scar from his bottom lip down his chin that neither really dares to speak of in polite company. With assassins on the rise, a boyfriend to date, and a life to live outside of all those complications, currently Junior never finds himself wanting for something to do.
tl;dr:
- Junior is the son of assassins, the family business back to his great grandmother, and also an "android" (genetically modified human, also from his great grandmother). His parents died when he was three. He was raised by his grandparents and doesn't use the name Will.
- When he first started school, Junior met an older boy in the same grade named Felix Bakar, whose arms were both cybernetic. Felix became his protector from bullies and they grew up as best friends and secretly crushed on each other.
- Years later after high school, Junior left town to pursue a higher degree of learning to bake. He learned that being trained and exercising and many of the things his grandparents taught him really weren't very normal.
- After education, he came back to town and opened a bakery called Buns & Roses. This put him on the map for basically every assassin organization to go after the legacy of the Vega family, either to kill or recruit him. Felix takes up the role of silent protector and ends up killing a lot of people offscreen.
- Felix and Junior try to flirt with each other and fail horribly, thinking senpai/kouhai doesn't notice them.
- Eventually an insane assassin comes for Junior and blows the whole facade aside. Felix tells him about all the killy-killing and the assassin family legacy and Junior keeps baking things.
- Life Endangerment: Felix Edition happens and Junior takes the initiative to finally make a move. Junior and Felix are now actually a couple! Level up!! Felix changed his name from Bakar to Altair because he's a nut. They are currently very cute.
PERSONALITY: To those who know him, Junior is an incredibly sweet person. His thoughts tend to circle around ways to make people happy or otherwise accomplish good things for the sake of his own or someone else's betterment, simply because it feels right and allows him to control his influence on the world. Although growing up sheltered has left him not very gifted in the way of communication or social interaction, left him shy and meek at times, Junior uses his actions to work around the limitations where he can, and shrugs off botched conversations where he can't. He's had enough of those to know how to let things go. People that he clicks with or make an effort to understand him rate high on his list of priorities because despite all his social issues, he is still a social person who would rather be surrounded by friends than alone. Not everyone understands how this works when he tends to get caught up in his own head, at a loss for words or simply taking a problem in too deep in order to analyze and overanalyze until he can come up with a response. He was given the time as a child and grown used to not having to rush himself in adulthood unless necessary.
In contrast to his attachment to people and good deeds, his moral compass is not quite as you might think. Raised by assassins (even without knowing it at the time), he can be cavalier about jokes of violence or often untouched by things that are too far out of his reach. Countering that is his need to be helpful where he can do something and can result in some erratic behavior. Protecting the innocent and helping the worthy are some of the greatest causes to Junior, not so much upholding justice no matter what that means at any given moment. That his boyfriend and grandparents are all assassins does not bother him, because he knows they aren't without standards, would never hurt or kill someone who didn't deserve the repercussion. Not to say they're noble or just, but they operate in the world following cause and effect like anyone else. He feels utterly safe with them despite the fact that he's constantly in danger of being killed, kidnapped, tortured or any number of things. His own mental fortitude doesn't make it easy to hurt others no matter the danger against himself, knowing that it would probably break him to break someone else, put a pressure on him that may or may not change him. It's just Not Good For Him. Because of this, he despises the instincts he's been left with thanks to his grandparents' training and avoids physical conflict at every chance. Where he goes in his head, a place of pure self-protection and precision, is not somewhere that he likes to be without control; in some of the few times he's been caught off guard and put into that mindset, he's disabled many people perceived to be threats up to broken bones but never to the point of death. That this condition was instilled by his grandparents has left a rift in his personal connection with them, but could never damage the love and trust he has in them. Some things are just hardwired.
Speaking of hardwired, Junior's status as an android has informed many of his opinions growing up. He was raised to distrust medical professionals as a matter of course to protect his identity, taught how to treat his own injuries or the rare sickness, and because of that became fiercely independent, able to take care of himself through some rough times if necessary. He views himself as having a healthy respect for nature's ability to survive, but does have to admit some respect for the more complex medical procedures such as transplants or cybernetics thanks to Felix's involvement. Pulling himself up by his bootstraps or only relying on those close to him is natural. Looking to higher authorities outside of his reach for aid? Not so much.
His love and trust is a powerful thing. When attached to other people, he has the tendency to encourage them to do their best not for his sake but their own. Seeing the progress he's made growing up with the support of Felix (and seeing Felix grow with his own support), he knows other people can do the same and wishes nothing but that revelation for others. Although "the best" might be subjective, pushing them toward becoming content with their lot or working to improve themselves is not. His optimism is matched by his stubbornness that makes it hard to shake him off; on the other hand, he doesn't overstay his actual welcome if he's obviously doing more harm than good. His natural instinct is to rely on the emotional state of people around him to try and guide his actions for good or ill: he knows people even if he can't really talk with them. Where his love is concerned, all of it is devoted to the existence of one Felix Altair, whom he's had a crush on basically since the word go. Felix is his protector, his shelter, his inspiration, the reason he came out of his shell at all, the world and the stars. Felix is everything Junior isn't, and he adores it all. Junior would not fight for Felix, would not willingly fight for much (if anything), but he would certainly die for him over and over again. Their loyalty is the thing of songs and poems and now that they're finally together (after years of oblivious flirting and crushes), it's sappy. as. fuck.
INCENTIVE: To remove his name from the minds of those trying to kill him, and erase the knowledge of why people would be after him (his family history and status as an android). Basically a peaceful life that won't change anything except for moving forward. [As this might not be possible due to the issues of consent with altering minds, he would also wish for the ability to keep Felix safe from said assassins when his boyfriend goes out to protect him.]
FIT: HE LOVES CUDDLES. FUCK YEAH. To be more serious, Junior is a rather open person with expression and physicality even if he has trouble actually putting himself into words most of the time. While he's taken back home, he would be open to sexual encounters and the like should it come up, and really has very few hangups that would stop him from getting close both platonically or sexually as long as he can connect to someone on an emotional level.
CONSENT: Consent is rather important to Junior. He isn't one to force his will on other people. This is seen a lot in his pacifistic nature, not to mention he simply hates making people uncomfortable for no reason. Considering he has a lot of his own issues with abrupt (usually violent) physical contact resulting in accidentally lashing out, he absolutely understands the need to make sure someone else knows what will be doing on or have their permission first.
SAMPLES: one / two
ANYTHING ELSE? Junior would absolutely let the authorities in Eudio know about his trained-instincts in reacting to violent encounters. That is to say, fighting back without having much of a choice in the matter. If they have advice or anything that might help with it, he'd gladly listen.Having found his life's calling as a baker, Junior takes his business rather seriously. He enjoys bringing smiles to peoples' faces and experimenting in the kitchen; his cooking isn't half-bad, but nothing next to his main interest. Pastries, artisan breads, you name it. He went to school for it, and has a minor in business to go with that. His natural body temperature sits closer to 99/100°F which only helps with his baking. His technological level matches that of his world, about a hundred years ahead of modern earth, and includes minor "outdated" programming ability, technological interface, and common knowledge on how to work some technology with his brain.
That said, he's been trained since he was young in martial arts, agility and general fitness until his reaction to a fight is purely instinctual once pushed. Basically some light brainwashing to keep him safe as he could be without knowing his family used to be hardcore assassins. As you do. Because of all this, he still practices his moves (alone) and keeps limber and in-shape even if he's never intended to put any of this to use.
As an android, there are several small differences about his physiology that will be noticeable upon professional examination. Most noticeable is a layer of film that forms in patterned breaks in between his skin and muscle to help absorb blows and guide gashes from going wild in the event of injury. His blood, when exposed to oxygen, turns a strange hue of red due to increased efficiency. As for actual enhancements, Junior: is stronger, faster, more reactive; has higher intellectual capability; has a modified pain response; possesses fine-tuned senses; and runs warmer than the average human. His senses are not quite "Hawkeye's crazy sight" or "can identify a tire by feeling rubber shavings" but do tend to pick up on things most would not even notice. For all of his capabilities, consider that "average" for an android is peak capability for a regular human and then extrapolate up for having good genes even in the nonmodified side of his family. It would take several well-trained regular humans to take him down in an actual fight.
